The largest British logistics firm Wincanton has partnered with kitchen and joinery specialist Magnet to deliver 44 new double-decker trailers, which represent a UK first in vehicle design.

Wincanton has invested £2 million in the new articulated trailers, establishing a faster and more fuel efficient supply chain: £600,000 of savings will be delivered and 700 tonnes of carbon emissions cut annually.

The new bespoke-built trailers, which are unique to Magnet in their design, have two decks to maximise the use of every inch of space on every single delivery. The trailers will save over 400,000 miles per year and reduce CO2 emissions by 700 tonnes per year, while delivering the same quantity of products.

Paul Durkin, director of home and DIY at Wincanton, said:

“Magnet and Wincanton are together leading the industry in using cutting-edge engineering and design to streamline the supply chain. The innovative new trailers ensure Magnet has one of the most efficient and effective delivery teams in the country.

“Magnet’s improved delivery service and efficiency demonstrates Wincanton’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of supply chain innovation, adding value to our customers’ operations with continuous improvement and customer care as an absolute priority.”

Wincanton handles some 33,000 deliveries a year for Magnet, transporting kitchen furniture, appliances and internal joinery products from the Darlington manufacturing plant to nearly 200 showrooms across the UK, via strategic distribution hubs, as well as providing a two-man home delivery service.

Paul Symmons, supply chain director at Nobia, Magnet’s parent company and one of the largest kitchen groups in Europe, said:

“Our customers demand the very best in craftsmanship and care. Working in partnership with Wincanton’s supply chain innovation and expertise we have been able to lead the industry in delivering the highest standards of customer service.”

“The 44 new double-decker trailers have enabled us to reduce the number of deliveries through increased loading capacity, which has directly led to increased customer satisfaction and a step change in the performance of the business.”

In April, Magnet extended its contract with Wincanton by five years, building on a nine-year relationship.
