Learn from the experts who will guide the start-ups through their innovation journey

W2 Labs

W2 Labs is Wincanton's flagship innovation programme that connects start-ups with industry challenges and provides them with the opportunity to test and scale their solutions in a live customer environment. The programme is divided into three categories: Robotics, Security and Resilience, and Digital Transport. Each category is supported by a team of mentors who are Wincanton's leaders and experts in their fields. They will provide feedback, advice, and insights to help the start-ups commercialise their products and deliver value to Wincanton and its customers.

As we fast approach the W2 Labs Pitch Day on 23rd April 2024, we introduce you to some of the mentors and their views on why W2 Labs is important, what they hope to bring to the programme, and what they are looking for in the start-ups.

Scott Merrick, Product Director, Robotics and Automation, Wincanton

Robotics

The Robotics category is focused on finding solutions that can improve the efficiency, flexibility, and safety of warehouse operations. This category is mentored by Scott Merrick, Product Director, Robotics and Automation, and Ian Hunt, Commercial National Automation and Engineering Director.

They have a wealth of experience in designing and implementing systems in manufacturing and logistics, and they are excited to work with start-ups that can offer innovative and cost-effective goods to person picking, case picking, and simulation capabilities. They believe that robotics and automation is a trend that gains traction every year, and Wincanton needs to be aware of and influence the changes in the market.

I’m really excited to work with the start-ups to help take what might be an idea and work it into an industry ready proposition.”

Kieran Croucher, Head of Cyber Security and Risk

Security and Resilience

The Security and Resilience category is focused on finding solutions that can protect Wincanton's and its customers' assets, data, and reputation from cyber threats and criminal activities. This category is mentored by Luke Robinson, Group HSEQ and Compliance Director, and Kieran Croucher, Head of Cyber Security and Risk.

They have a strong background in security, risk, and crime prevention, and they are looking for start-ups that can use AI and CCTV to enhance the protection of people and assets, as well as provide enhanced visibility and resilience in the supply chain. They believe that security and resilience is a key differentiator for Wincanton and a vital requirement for its customers.

Becoming a mentor allows me to give new ideas, and the people behind those ideas, the exposure and support necessary to develop and improve the sector.”

Helen Flanagan, Product Director for EyeQ

Digital Transport

The Digital Transport category is focused on finding solutions that can optimise the utilisation of transport assets, reduce the environmental impact of transport operations, and improve the visibility and collaboration across the supply chain. This category is mentored by Carl Hanson, Managing Director, Group Transport, and Helen Flanagan, Product Director for EyeQ, Wincanton’s digital transport solution.

They have a deep knowledge and passion for digital solutions and data analytics, and they are looking for start-ups that can use these technologies to solve the industry's challenges and achieve its net zero ambitions. They believe that digital transport is essential for Wincanton to provide continuous, efficient, and cost-effective services to its customers.

As the product lead for Wincanton’s digital transport solution, my role is to constantly improve and develop our products so that we continue to add value and delight our customers.”
