The Top New Talent list was launched by the Grocer in 2013 with two central aims: to recognise and reward up-and-coming talent in grocery retail, wholesale and supply; and to highlight the wide variety of roles that make up the FMCG industry.

2016 marks the first year a 3PL has been represented in the Top New Talent list.

For James, promoting logistics as a viable career option has been a passion during his time at Wincanton and he remains committed to developing bright new talent in the industry. Commenting on his inclusion, he said:

“I am honoured to be named in this year’s prestigious Top New Talent list. I have a real passion for logistics, supply chain and retail, and helped to establish the new ‘Your Future’ programme within Wincanton to help encourage and support the next generation who want to cultivate their careers within the logistics industry.”

He added,

"It's well documented that the industry faces increasing skills shortages and a need for greater gender diversity. It’s crucial that the industry acts now to address these challenges and to build a sustainable pipeline of future talent. Your Future is one of the ways Wincanton is looking to do just that.”

The Your Future programme, developed and promoted by James in his role, has changed the career proposition that Wincanton offers those looking to enter the industry. The programme offers a structure which aims to assist trainees in their Wincanton career and enables them to develop a wide range of transferrable skills.

Following the completion of the programme, trainees can follow a warehouse pathway that includes further management training, or a placement to the site of a major Wincanton customer. Alternatively, trainees can apply for a driving position following the completion of an HGV license.

In addition to being a major part of the team that created and implemented the Your Future programme, James is also a mentor for the Novus trust. With a focus on supply chain management, NOVUS degree courses are offered at the University of Huddersfield and focus on close collaboration with many leading names in manufacturing, retail and logistics with a guarantee of a job following completion of the course.
