Wincanton wins CILT Health & Safety award for Wickes work

Press releases | 22 October 2018

Wincanton, the largest British logistics company, has won the Health & Safety award at the 2018 CILT Annual Awards for Excellence, for its work with Wickes. The awards took place at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London, on Thursday 18 October.

Wincanton has been managing Wickes’ ‘big and bulky’ home deliveries, which includes products such as sand, aggregate, bricks and paving slabs, since February 2017.

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) honoured Wincanton's exemplary health and safety programme during this work. The programme was praised for educating, raising awareness and engaging staff in an active safety culture.

Paul Durkin, Director of Home and eFulfilment at Wincanton, said:

“It’s a great honour to be recognised for our commitment to health and safety.

“This award recognises our great team ethic, and collaboration between Wincanton and Wickes to safeguard the wellbeing of our colleagues, customers and the wider public.

“By translating our technology and engaging our colleagues we’ve improved safety and enhanced Wickes customer experience.”

As part of Wincanton’s work with Wickes, mobile technology has been utilised to make each delivery as safe as possible.

Drivers use a mobile application to complete risk assessments as part of every delivery. The data can be viewed in real-time, allowing supervisors to give quick advice and feedback.

Near-miss incidents can also be reported through the application, helping to inform future training.

As well as using technology, drivers participate in dynamic risk management methods such as GOAL (Get Out And Look). This helps them assess difficult situations and has contributed to CMKs (Collisions per Million Kilometres) dropping by 45%.

The CILT Annual Awards for Excellence recognise achievement across a number of categories and reward the highest industry standards in logistics and transport.
