Ambitious transformation

As provider of transport services for a leading supermarket chain, Wincanton is at the heart of one of the most ambitious and far-reaching transformation programmes in British retail.

The grocer understood that optimising its logistics operation was essential to meeting its goals, including the delivery of its carbon reduction targets by 2035.

By moving to a single integrated supply chain and logistics network, Wincanton has been able to create efficiencies through economies of scale. The grocer has also benefitted from Wincanton-led knowledge sharing and increased innovation, while reducing its operating cost base and carbon emissions.

Sustainable savings and solutions

Wincanton has taken a cross-functional approach, investing in a team which is structured to realise value and efficiencies. This approach introduced several strategic carbon and cost saving initiatives from the outset.

Wincanton reviewed the planning profiles and optimised store delivery profiles, as well as increasing the use of double-deck trailers, reducing the number of vehicles on the road.

Wincanton has also facilitated collaboration across the grocer’s supplier base, including a major FMCG brand, and is reducing empty running with a focus on backhaul – thus reducing end-to-end supply chain carbon emissions and cost.

To date, these initiatives have saved 4.7 million road kms and eradicated 4.3 million tonnes of CO2e across the network.
