Our learning and development academy is available to help you improve your confidence at work and equip you with all the skills you need covering health and safety, driver training, warehouse skills and management development. We also offer many professional and personal development opportunities such as mentoring support, attendance on one of our talent programmes or a secondment into another area of the business. Whatever your role and wherever your ambition lies, we’ll tailor your development to meet your needs and provide all the support you require to progress.
We place a great deal of emphasis on the training of our drivers and recognising their ability. Through the Wincanton driver STAR programme (Standards, Training, Attitiude and Recognition) we continue to set industry standards using our risk based method of annual assessment. We are working to ensure all our drivers achieve the GOLD standard, and individuals are rewarded through the recognition scheme, which is designed to improve individual’s skills and ability and provide greater performance and efficiency of the company.
We offer entry level training for new or less experienced drivers through our licence acquisition scheme process. This is a controlled, on-boarding structure to enable individuals to develop the required skills and confidence to the achieve the Wincanton driver standard. Drivers will achieve the DGV level 2 BTEC driver apprenticeship as part of this scheme.
Wincanton also, as part of continued development, annually give drivers seven hours CPC training with wide ranging subjects such as legal conformance, fuel performance and individual well-being.
We aim to provide clear career progression opportunities within our warehouses using the Learning and Development Framework. We offer warehouse NVQs and Qualified Career Framework certificates for colleagues to complete as well as regular health and safety sessions to ensure a safe working environment.
Our award winning talent management strategy means that we are able to recognise our employees’ potential early on and support their future growth. Our talent management development programmes focus on the progression of individuals as well as leadership skills from first line supervisors to senior executives. A series of masterclasses run in parallel to the standard programmes to meet ad-hoc needs and develop key behaviours.
