Driving value downstream

Wincanton provides both bespoke and shared user supply chain solutions for customers in the downstream industry, typically involved in refining, storing and distributing petroleum and gaseous products.  Operating tankers since 1925, we now run a fleet of 500 modern petroleum, aviation, lubricant and bulk gas tankers that incorporate the latest safety and performance innovation.

Supply chain services for energy customers 

Providing supply chain solutions for many of the largest energy companies in the UK, Wincanton has access to the majority of terminals and refineries providing nationwide coverage. We manage distribution activities along the complete supply chain; from transporting crude oil to the onward fuel transportation to industrial and commercial customers: rail terminals, manufacturing plants, ‘driver controlled deliveries’ to retail forecourts, airports, RAF and Naval bases.

Wincanton also has nationwide operations across our gas customers, delivering bulk and packaged gases to hospitals, sales centres, industrial and manufacturing plants, as well as LPG deliveries to private properties and farms. We provide a national distribution service for packaged and bulk lubricants, and engineering stores warehousing for oil refineries.

Wincanton offers a wide breadth of supply chain solutions to energy customers, including:

  • order taking, vehicle scheduling and routing

Innovation and continuous improvement  

 In 2010 we received the Prince Michael Award in recognition of 25 years commitment to tanker road safety innovation. Integral to the day to day operation, our contract management teams are involved in delivering value for our customers. We apply continuous improvement programmes, targeting key areas to deliver costs savings and operational efficiencies for our customers combined with Lean Six Sigma principles. And because our customers' businesses change regularly we carry out supply chain reviews and optimisation exercises to ensure the delivered solution is still meeting the needs of the business.

Excellent safety performance 

Wincanton is committed to creating an ‘incident free’ operating environment - a positive culture where safety is everyone’s responsibility. We have a continual programme of training and safety initiatives to eliminate hazards before they occur. Wincanton regularly seeks to improve performance levels beyond the minimum criteria set by legislation. Wincanton has a Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) dedicated to our tanker sector and driver trainers in place to train our ADR drivers in line with our in-house accredited driver training programme.

Emergency response team 

Wincanton provides a 24/7/365 emergency response service for our customers. Level one response is provided by the National Chemical Emergency Centre inOxford. Level two response is provided by trained Wincanton teams to manage incidents on the ground and co-ordinate activities such as vehicle recovery, clean up of contaminant and product transfer.

Our emergency response incident controllers can be on scene in any part of the country within three hours of receiving the call. Regular training exercises are carried out with the involvement of the appropriate authorities and emergency services.
